How to Watermark Multiple PDFs at Once (Free, in Your Browser)

Step-by-step guide to batch watermarking PDFs: add the same text or logo to every page of many PDF files at once, choose pages, and download them all as a ZIP.

By the BigWatermark Editorial Team

Quick answer

To watermark many PDFs at once, open BigWatermark, drop all your PDF files (or one ZIP that contains them) onto the page, choose a text or logo watermark, set its opacity, angle and position, and click Apply. Every file gets the same watermark, and you can download the results one by one or as a single ZIP.

Why batch watermarking beats doing it file by file

Opening twenty contracts one at a time in a desktop PDF editor, adding the same stamp and saving each copy is slow and easy to get wrong. One file ends up with the watermark slightly higher, another gets the old wording, a third is forgotten. Batch watermarking applies one set of settings to every file in a single pass, which gives you three advantages:

  • Consistency: every page of every document carries exactly the same text, size, angle and position.
  • Speed: a batch of a hundred PDFs takes about as much effort as a single file — you configure the watermark once.
  • Fewer mistakes: you preview the result before applying it, so there are no surprises after distribution.

What to prepare before you start

  • Collect the PDFs in one folder or ZIP archive. BigWatermark accepts loose files, entire folders and ZIPs, including files in sub-folders.
  • Decide on the wording. Short, uppercase words such as CONFIDENTIAL, DRAFT or SAMPLE read best at an angle.
  • If you want a logo, export it as a transparent PNG or SVG so only the logo — not a white rectangle — is stamped.
  • Keep your originals. BigWatermark always creates new copies with “-watermarked” added to the file name, but it is good practice to archive the clean versions separately.

Step-by-step: watermark multiple PDFs with BigWatermark

  1. Go to the PDF watermark tool (or the home page — both use the same engine).
  2. Drag all your PDFs onto the upload area, or click Select files / Upload folder. ZIP archives are unpacked automatically.
  3. In the work panel, pick a preset such as CONFIDENTIAL or type your own text. For a logo, switch the watermark type to Image and upload it.
  4. Adjust font, size, color and opacity. Around 25–35% keeps the underlying text readable.
  5. Set the rotation (45° is the classic diagonal), choose one of the nine positions, or enable Repeat Pattern to tile it across the page.
  6. Use Target Pages if you only want the first page, odd or even pages, or a custom range like 1-3, 10.
  7. Click through a few files in the queue to check the live preview, then press Apply.
  8. Download the files individually or click Download All as ZIP and give the archive a meaningful name.

How to watermark only certain pages

Not every document needs a stamp on every page. A cover sheet might need a large DRAFT mark while the remaining pages stay clean, or a printed booklet might need the watermark only on odd (right-hand) pages. Under Target Pages you can choose all pages, the current page, the first or last page, odd or even pages, or type a custom list. Custom ranges use commas for single pages and dashes for ranges — for example 1-3, 7, 12-15. The same rule is applied to every PDF in the batch; pages that do not exist in a shorter file are simply skipped.

Scanned PDFs, forms and protected files

Scanned PDFs are just images inside a PDF container, so the watermark is drawn on top of the scan exactly like any other page. Fillable forms keep their fields and existing annotations. Password-protected PDFs are different: if a password is required to open the file, its content is encrypted and cannot be watermarked reliably. Remove the protection first (only if you are authorized to do so), watermark the file, and then re-apply a password in your PDF software if needed.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Setting opacity too high, which makes the document hard to read and annoys recipients.
  • Placing a small watermark in a corner of a confidential document, where it is easy to crop out.
  • Using long sentences at a 45° angle — they run off the page. Keep diagonal text short or reduce the font size.
  • Forgetting to check a landscape page in a mostly portrait batch. Preview a few different files before applying.

Is it safe to watermark PDFs online?

It depends on the tool. Many online services upload your files to their servers. BigWatermark processes PDFs entirely inside your browser: the files are read from your disk, modified in memory and saved back to your device without being transmitted. That makes it a good fit for contracts, HR records and financial documents. Read more in our guide to protecting confidential PDFs before sharing.
